I’ve[G] travelled round these islands, from [C]shore to shining [G]shore
I’ve[G] met so many heroes from
the [D]team that I adore
I [G]followed Glasgow Celtic, from [C]Lisbon to Aber[G]deen
But I always remember Johnny Doyle
[D]in the [G]Green.
He [G]came from Ayr United, to[C] join his favourite [G]team
To play for Glasgow Celtic, would [D]fulfill his dream
about St. Patrick’s Day, [C]signed by Big Jock [G]Stein
He played only for the jersey, Johnny [D]Doyle in the [G]Green.
And [C]Johnny Doyle [G]told me, not long before he died
He said I [C]love my Glasgow [G]Celtic
Because I'm just
a [D]Celtic [G]boy.
In Europe 1980, we all know what Johnny did
He capped a great performance, against Real Madrid
with two defenders, to win the ball so clean
With Sabido and Camacho, was John Doyle in the Green.
So in your prayers remember, a gallant Celtic son
His young life cut so cruelly, in 1981
nineteenth of October, turned a gray and rainy day
And then I heard John Doyle, had sadly passed away.
