Rathingle Swords

Rathingle is an area of Swords Dublin and situated 3km south west from the Main street. Before the early 1980s only the cottages were actually named as Rathingle. When the last phase of Rivervalley was built the builder placed a sign on the entrance to the second entrance of the estate at the junction where Boroimhe is now and named this area Rathingle.

The strange part of this is that there was already an area just 100 meters away that also used the same name. Fingal County Council, who have a say in the naming of roads and housing estates turned a blind eye or simply didn't care that there were now 2 places in Swords with the name Rathingle.

That was the early 1980's and things have not got any better as the whole area from the shops in Rivervalley to Ridgewood is now deemed to be the area known as Rathingle. The residents of the Real Rathingle have suffered greatly over the past 30 years from not receiving their post. If the regular postman takes time off and a sub takes over then the post goes to Rivervalley instead. From postmen to delivery vans, it's the same story. But things should change when the new post code comes into play soon.

Rathingle Swords

These cottages were built around 1910 by the local council. At the time there were 1000 people living in Swords. The household water for these cottages came from the water pump which still stands to this day. Mains water did not come until the early 1970's. When the pump ran dry, which often happened then there was the well at the top of the lane in the photo where you brought your bucket for a fill.
