An tAthair Micheál Ó Suilleabháin spent most of his priesthood in Sydney, Australia.  I used to attend Irish Classes in Sydney when I lived there many years ago, and got to know him well at those classes. This was the first song ‘as Gaeilge’ I ever wrote and is in homage to a great person and gentle soul.
I never released it officially, but sent tapes to many Irish radio programmes in Australia at the time.  It got a lot of airplay.

(D) i mbád ar bharr(Am) borradh i (G) gcuan an (F)Chorcaigh
(D)An (C) tAthair Mic(D)heál
(D)Ar a laethanta (Am) saoire ó [An] (G) Austráil thar (F) sáile
(D)An (C) tAthair Mic(D)heál
i (G) mbróga an t-iascaireacht, (Gm) mbróga an t-iascaireacht
(A) An tAthair Mic(D)heál
(2)
Aimsir an tsamhraidh, an ghrian miongháire
An tAthair Micheál
Garbh gaofar, [na] nóiníní ag damhsa,
An tAthair Micheál
Saighdiúir Íosa Críost é, Saighdiúir Íosa Críost
An tAthair Micheál
(3)
Séipéal i Sydney, an tAifreann as Gaeilge
An tAthair Micheál
Saighdiúir Íosa Críost, grá teanga ár sinsear
An tAthair Micheál
Maith an fear thú, maith an fear thú,
tAthair Micheál,
Maith an fear thú, maith an fear thú, tAthair Micheál.

i mbád ar bharr borradh i gcuan an Chorcaigh
In a boat on the top of a wave, in Cork Harbour

Ar a laethanta saoire ó [An] Austráil thar sáile
On his holidays from Australia, over the salty sea
An tAthair Micheál Fr. Michael
i mbróga an t-iascaireacht, mbróga an t-iascaireacht
In the shoes of the fisherman, in the shoes of the fisherman
An tAthair Micheál Fr. Michael
(2)
Aimsir an tsamhraidh, an ghrian miongháire
The summer weather, the smiling sun
An tAthair Micheál Fr. Michael
Garbh gaofar, [na] nóiníní ag damhsa,
Rough, windy, [the] daisies dancing
An tAthair Micheál Fr. Michael
Saighdiúir Íosa Críost é, Saighdiúir Íosa Críost
He is a Soldier of Christ, a Soldier of Christ
An tAthair Micheál Fr. Michael

Séipéal i Sydney, an tAifreann as Gaeilge,
A chapel in Sydney, the mass ‘as Gaeilge’

A Soldier of Christ, the love of the language of our ancestors
An tAthair Micheál Fr. Michael
