At Monaseed on a summer's morning Song Lyrics. Recorded by Paddy Berry. A rebel song from the 1798 rebellion at Wexford / Wicklow.

At Monaseed on a summer's morning,
Our brave boys halted a rest to take
The anciant Britons in uniform,
On Slievebawn Hill a great show did make
They thought we'd run when we saw them coming,
But that was play for our heroes brave.
We marched before them to Ballyellis
There is the place where we made their grave.

We marched before them to Ballyellis,
To the little watch-house towards Carnew
There is the place where we did engage them
Such other Piking you never knew,
We left the town when the fight was over,
Our boys indeed had no more to do,
We crossed Bridswell, marched through Camolin,
And encamped that night upon Carrigrus.

Early next morning by our captain's order,
Through Shillelagh we marched straight,
And that same evening at Ballyrahan,
Gave Major Chamney a great defeat,
And cowardly Gowan the day he joined them,
He called his men and away did run,
Long Smith and Slater, a bloody traitor,
He fell that day by a Croppy gun.

But cowardly Gowan the day he joined them,
He called his men and away did run,
Like a hunted Fox he crossed the rocks,
When he heard the sound of a Croppy Gun.

Success attend you sweet County Wexford,
You reared the boys who were ne'er afraid,
Of bloody yeomen or Ancient Briton,
But on such cowards great slaughter made
